Guest lecture: on notation, authorship, and interpretation

At the invitation of Dr. Liz Ho (HKU), Angus Lee delivered a guest lecture for the AILT9009 AI Literacy 2: Humanities course at the University of Hong Kong. Entitled Notation, Authorship, Interpretation: The Work of Art in the Age of Digital Mediation, the lecture explored questions of authorship, interpretation, notation, artificial intelligence, and digital mediation within contemporary musical practice.

Drawing upon examples from both historical and contemporary repertoires across classical music, K-pop, and AI generated music and images, the lecture examined the changing relationship between creator, performer, and listener in an age increasingly shaped by digital technologies. Topics discussed included the aesthetics of transcription and adaptation, the status of musical notation, artificial intelligence in artistic production, and the continued role of human interpretation in contemporary culture.

The lecture forms part of Angus Lee's ongoing research into internet-mediated musical practices and digital culture, currently being developed through his doctoral dissertation and related creative projects.
