Heimat | Homeland | 家: Vienna-Hong Kong intercultural exchange

Facilitated by the EPU-UNINET scheme, Angus Lee will participate as a guest composer and conductor in the international intercultural exchange symposium Heimat | Homeland | 家, hosted by the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien (mdw) in Vienna, Austria.

The project is the initiative of Spanish composer Daniel Serrano, lecturer in music theory at mdw's Leonard Bernstein Institut für Konzertfach Blas- und Schlaginstrumente. The symposium combines workshops, guest teaching, discussions, and performances centred on intercultural perspectives between Vienna and Hong Kong. Its creative component will involve the creation and première of new works by composers based in both cities, performed by the Vienna-based Ensemble N.

The exchange builds upon an earlier collaboration initiated in 2025, when Daniel Serrano and Ensemble N pianist Luca Lavuri travelled to HKU and CUHK Shenzhen for the special project Saiten-Tasten, which likewise combined performance and guest lecturing activities. On that occasion, works by Angus Lee, Daniel Lo, and Jing Wang were premièred.

The Vienna residency will take place in January 2027 and will involve Angus Lee and Jing Wang (HKU), Kai-Young Chan (CUHK), and Daniel Serrano, Oscar Bianchi, and Luca Lavuri (mdw).

Lee will lead the première performances of a number of newly commissioned works during the final concert alongside Ensemble N artistic director, Swedish conductor Jon Svinghammar.
