Hotel Stage: OPUS concert series

Angus Lee has been invited as part of the artist line-up for Hotel Stage’s brand new concert series, OPUS. Conceived and curated by Hongkong violinist Sean Lai, the new series is focused on creating intimate experiences of Classical music within the cosy space of Hotel Stage’s MUSE, a hybrid space that merges an art gallery, a bar, and a book shop. The series will play host to some of the City’s most celebrated Classical musicians, including Charles Ng (saxophone), Rachel Cheung (piano), Alison Lau (voice), Stephen Hung (piano) and the Cong Quartet.

For his recital on 12th December, Angus will be joined by pianist Mark Hui in a programme that features two towering romantic works for the flute — Carl Reinecke’s Undine Sonata, and César Franck’s Sonata in A major. Bridging the two works is an 18-minute solo piano work, aux portes des rêves (2015; subtitled  “fantasia quasi una fantasia”), by Angus. This programme of three pieces was originally the centrepiece of a lengthier duo-recital held by Angus and flautist Dan-wei Li in 2015. On the occasion, aux portes des rêves premiered by Rachel Cheung. The piece was further performed by the Singaporean pianist, Thomas Ang, in a duo recital held at the Royal Academy of Music (London) in 2016, also featuring the sonatas by Reinecke and Franck, performed by Angus and the Lithuanian flautist, Silvija Ščerbavičiūtė.

Hotel Stage was a vital sponsoring partner of the PRISM Chamber Music Festival, which Angus and Sean directed between 2018 and 2019. The recitals of the featured musicians of both years — celebrated harpist, Mélanie Genin, and the maverick trombone virtuoso, Felix Del Tredici — were held also at Hotel Stage’s MUSE.

Tickets are now available via Art-Mate; each ticket covers a free drink.
